Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Definition of Artificial Insemination

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) designed to increase the chances of conception by enhancing the natural fertilization process. The treatment involves using ovulation-inducing medications to stimulate the ovaries, encouraging the development of multiple mature eggs. Throughout the cycle, transvaginal ultrasounds and blood hormone tests are used to monitor follicle growth and egg maturation.

When the eggs are ready, an injection is administered to trigger ovulation. A processed and highly concentrated sperm sample is then placed directly into the uterine cavity, bypassing the cervix and increasing the likelihood of successful fertilization.

Types of Artificial Insemination

  • AIH (Artificial Insemination by Husband): Uses the partner’s sperm.
  • AID (Artificial Insemination by Donor): Uses donor sperm.

IUI Treatment Process

Start of Treatment

Visit the clinic between Day 1 and Day 3 of your menstrual cycle.

Ovulation-stimulating medications—either oral or injectable—are prescribed to encourage follicle development. Monitoring is conducted through ultrasound imaging and hormone blood tests.
2. Ovulation Trigger
After 2–3 monitoring visits, the optimal ovulation time is identified.
An hCG injection is administered approximately 35–36 hours before insemination to trigger egg release.

Sperm Collection & IUI Procedure

Typically scheduled between Cycle Day 12 and Day 14

Both partners must bring original identification and sign an informed consent form.
The male partner provides a semen sample at the clinic. Home collection is allowed but must be delivered within 1 hour.
In the lab, the semen sample is washed to remove non-motile sperm and concentrate the healthiest ones.
A thin catheter is used to insert the prepared sperm into the uterus. The procedure takes 5–10 minutes and does not require anesthesia.
Afterward, the patient rests for 15 minutes.
Luteal phase support, such as progesterone supplementation, may be prescribed.

Pregnancy Testing
A pregnancy blood test is performed approximately 12–14 days after the IUI procedure, typically between Cycle Day 26 and Day 28.

Cost of IUI in Taiwan

The total cost of intrauterine insemination typically ranges from NT$20,000 to NT$50,000, depending on individual needs and the medications required. Fees generally include:

  • Ovulation medications and injections
  • Ultrasound monitoring
  • Sperm washing and preparation
  • Hormone blood tests
  • Luteal phase support medications

IUI Success Rates

IUI provides a 5–10% higher pregnancy rate compared to unassisted conception in natural cycles. However, success varies depending on age, fertility diagnosis, and treatment adherence.

How to Improve IUI Success Rates

For men:

Abstain from ejaculation for 3–5 days before semen collection to optimize sperm quality.

For women:

Maintain a healthy diet and weight

Exercise moderately

Take prenatal vitamins and folic acid (800 mcg daily)

Get regular sunlight exposure to boost vitamin D
