DHEA is an intermediate product in the production of estrogen, androgen, and progesterone hormones. Even without supplementation, our bodies naturally secrete DHEA, which also helps in the production of other hormones. After adulthood, the secretion of DHEA gradually decreases with age.
Among infertility groups, DHEA is often used as a supplement to boost energy supply for egg stimulation.
Anti-depression
Using DHEA to treat depression has shown to be more effective than a placebo.
Improves vaginal atrophy
Limited studies have indicated that DHEA may help relieve vaginal dryness in postmenopausal women.
Anti-osteoporosis
Some research shows that supplementing with DHEA may improve bone mineral density in older adults. However, compared to osteoporosis medications, the improvement from DHEA is minimal.
Anti-aging
Theoretically, DHEA supplementation may slow aging and possibly improve cognitive function and physical condition. However, this hypothesis is not supported by any research at this time.
Because DHEA is a hormone, supplementing DHEA carries risks for hormone-related cancers, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. Therefore, if you are at high risk for these cancers, do not use DHEA.
In addition, pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using DHEA.
Furthermore, those with high cholesterol or ischemic heart disease should avoid using DHEA, as it may lower your “good” cholesterol (HDL).
It may also worsen emotional disorders, and cause oily skin, acne problems, and hirsutism.
Overall, the safety of DHEA with hormone-related cancers requires particular attention!
If you wish to conceive and are considering DHEA supplementation, it is recommended to consult a physician who understands your condition before making a decision.
