During consultations, some women come alone for infertility evaluation. After the consultation, most believe the problem lies with themselves and assume the male partner has no issues. However, if a couple has been trying to conceive for over a year without contraception and hasn’t seen a “double line,” the male should also undergo testing.
Semen analysis is the most basic examination for men and is an essential test for all couples facing infertility.
How is a semen analysis conducted?
Huayu uses a Computer-aided Sperm Analysis system (CASA) to perform the examination, replacing manual microscopy. The system analyzes sperm count and morphology, and more importantly, evaluates sperm motility. It is currently the most essential and straightforward way to assess male fertility.
It is recommended to abstain from ejaculation for 3–5 days before testing.
Huayu has a dedicated semen collection room. If the sample is collected at home, it should be delivered to the clinic within one hour at room temperature.
What are the normal values for semen analysis?
- Sperm concentration: At least 15 million sperm per 1cc of semen.
- Total sperm count: At least 39 million.
- Semen volume: 2–5 mL. Too little indicates fewer sperm available for fertilization, while too much may dilute the sperm.
- Sperm motility: At least 40% should be motile within one hour of ejaculation.
Motility is graded A to D:
A – Rapid, straight-line movement
B – Slow forward movement
C – Movement in place
D – Immotile - Sperm morphology: Evaluated based on head, neck, and tail.
- Liquefaction time: Normal semen liquefies within 15–30 minutes.
- Color: Normal semen is milky white.

Infertility evaluations are equally important for men and women. Compared to women, men have easier testing procedures.
