What Is the Definition of Infertility?
Infertility is usually defined as failing to conceive after more than 6 months of regular, unprotected intercourse.
“Infertility does not mean you cannot get pregnant—it simply means it’s more difficult.” Sometimes pregnancy is a matter of chance. Many couples struggling with infertility may still conceive naturally.
Common Causes of Infertility Can Be Grouped Into Four Categories::
👉Female factors: Problems with ovulation, hormones, uterus, or fallopian tubes
👉Male factors: Low sperm count, poor motility, sperm production issues in the testes, abnormalities in sperm transport, or sexual dysfunction
👉Combined factors: Both partners have contributing infertility issues
👉Unexplained infertility: No identifiable cause found after routine evaluation (Most cases can still be successfully treated.)
📊Estimated Cause Distribution:
Female factors: ~30%
Male factors: ~30%
Combined & unexplained: ~40%
Which Tests Can Help Evaluate Infertility?
🙋♀️ For Women:
• Ovarian reserve testing (AMH)
• Hysterosalpingography (HSG)
• Hysteroscopy
🙋♂️ For Men:
• Semen analysis
(*Recommend abstinence for 3–5 days prior to testing for more accurate results.)
Once abnormalities are identified, and the cause of infertility is known, targeted treatment can begin.
